iWebDJ Theme (very rough!) by PureAV iWebDJ Theme (very rough!) by PureAV
iWebDJ (www.iwebdj.com) is a sweet new browser-based flash dj console. The developer (just one amazing guy) has developed some sick beat matching algorithms. If you're into this stuff, I urge you to visit the site and try out the online demos of both the remix and automix players.

NOTE! This is a VERY rough version. The quality is totally pants. I'm always justifying my work...I should probably be less critical. Yeah.

But yeah, he came to me and asked for some designs. This will eventually be the default theme (I assume so anyway). As you can see from the current default skin on the website, I rearranged the layout somewhat to feel more like existing DJ software. Still have a lot of work to do but figured I'd share it with you as a WIP so far. :)

Very nice. Those radial indicators are fantastic; love how it's so simple, yet the subtle highlights infer a deep glassy look. Needs some more contrast in the gray areas, like just below/around the buttons.
You actually going to be working with flash?

That is some nice programming, too. Respect the man who can write algorithms to analyze the ever-complex waveform.

Perfect colors.

awsome looking Lance, clean and slick :)
only thing i notice is that its somewhat greyish, i feel like you killed contrast and some buttons kind of feel like they are "hazing" in the background (lol)
anyway , good work man

Thanks dude! Aye mate I don't usually work in pure greyscale, I prefer shades of blue. But the site was pure greyscale so I made it match. Thanks again Mr Kane (ha......it ryhmes _)

Nice work on this! Clean stuff! :) Love those rotary controls over the sync buttons (specifically the color grading).

Looks great. The only thing i would say is that since you're referencing current popular DJ UI's you should keep in mind what I find to be the most annoying aspect of DJ UI's which is the way they attempt to mimic real-world UI's (sound boards, etc). Better to adhere to some of the usability standards that designers adhere to when making UI's for websites and stuff. I've always found while working in cubase, reason, even protools that the UI's they've created are slow, clunky, and click-intensive. Compared to like... Adobe software or iTunes, which are made for speed and ease of use.

WIP looks good though. It's very unintimidating.

Hey man. Thanks a lot for the lengthy comment :)

I agree with you partly on UI's replicating hardware, more often than not it's done quite terribly. However, my own design style is mostly based on replicating, but this isn't for the sake of simply wanting to, it's more for design and technique practice than anything else. It's much more challenging to create a realistic slider or peak meter than simply drawing a line with an arrow. My ultimate aim with GUI though is to find a balance between simple usable designs and ones that capture the creative eye.

I have 10 years of experience with audio software and am currently using ableton live myself, so I'm aware of what makes a clean GUI. But I've also been frustrated with certain software being too plain and simple. Preference plays a big part in all of this, there's no right or wrong approach.

All that said, I'll be creating more than one theme for iWebDJ and I plan on making clean ableton-esque versions too :) Thanks again for your comment dude!
